I often find myself wondering when it was that hookers and cocaine suddenly fell from grace. I mean, what happened here? They were all the rage in the 80’s. You couldn’t turn on a TV without being inundated by a news story or police show depicting at least one, but more often than not, both of these 80’s icons. Right now, as you read this, you’re probably thinking, “Yeah…...

Today. I don’t even know where to start. This is probably going to be short and moderately incoherent, but I have some crazy that I need to get out. This is, after all, my blog.
I’ve been doing some social media work at an ad agency recently. My sense of self worth has bounced back to a level equal to or higher than it was before I got fired just by being there. I love what I’m doing....

I had a lot of footage from my Flip UltraHD lying around and it seemed a shame not to use it. The audio track is “Clocks & Timepieces” by the Detroit band Search The City. Some of the video is from Jolie O’Dell’s visit to Toledo, the Mashable #Hyatt4Good Tweetup Tour stop in Chicago, #Tattooleetup, and the July #Toleetup. And yes, the title and logo are a play on My So-Called...

As many of you already know, my employer terminated my employment last Thursday. Since I was apparently officially employed until the end of the business week, I’m considering today “Day One” of my bout with unemployment. But make no mistake, I am not a statistic. I am not a victim. I’m a husband, a father, and a social media evangelist. A piece of paper from a former employer...

Seriously. People go apeshit for this kind of stuff. The screenshot below is not altered in any way. Mark Pannell is truly friends with Mark Pannell now. Weird, right?

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been changing the theme on this here blog about as often as I change my underwear. Once a week. I’ve been experimenting with some free themes, trying my hand at designing my own, and exploring the benefits of paid themes. I think I’ve finally settled on one that really appeals to me, but I have a little customizing to do before I unleash it.
What...

I wish my name started with a hard consonant. You know the ones I’m talking about: B, D, G, T, V, and Z. They’re a built-in nickname.
The other day, I saw a friend that I’ve known for fifteen years. His name is Damian. I said, “What’s up, D?” That’s never been an officially-sanctioned nickname for him. But he knew I was talking to him.
Nobody has ever walked...

I was listening to Crossbreed while I was looking through some of Mike Brice’s pictures from Social Media Breakfast Toledo 3 and somehow the imagery just… fit. I decided to use it as a promo video for SocialSev. Enjoy.

As I was getting ready to go to sleep tonight, I saw the following tweet from @zaneology:
When I followed the link, I was taken to the YouTube video below. Throughout the day, news reports of Michael Jackson’s death flooded my senses. At the risk of sounding callous, I didn’t really care. It was presented as a news story, not the loss of a human life. But as I sat alone in the dark in...

Did you know that a group of kangaroos is called a mob? On a completely unrelated note, I spent the majority of Friday in the hospital. I received a prank phone call on Saturday from two social media rock stars that I respect and admire. I thought I was dying again on Monday. And I had my store’s best inventory ever on Saturday, immediately followed by an email confirming that a local network...

I’ve chosen Gene’s Cowboy Hat for the first subject of my unofficial Spotlight On… series. The Gene in question is, of course, Gene Powell at Spoke. These features can usually be found on our TOLeeps blog, but I felt that this was more personal and that it was appropriate to share this story of heartbreak and betrayal here instead. As many of you know, Gene Powell is a social media...

In case you missed it, here’s the recorded footage from the video Livestreams for Tattooleetup. Both videos are available to watch by clicking the On-Demand button at the bottom of the player.

After last Friday’s Social Media Breakfast Toledo, I decided to document my five year life plan. Rather than spend all afternoon blogging about it, I opted to shoot a quick video while running out to McDonald’s to grab Noah a Happy Meal. You can watch that video below.
But my Five Year Plan had to take the backseat to my Five Minute Plan, thanks to being absent-minded from a complete lack...

This is classic. I almost completely forgot about this. Sometimes I’m glad I’m such an email pack rat. With over half a million followers, Justine Ezarik (iJustine) has a following to followers ratio of 1:209. That means that she follows less than one half of 1% of the people who follow her. How did I get so lucky? No idea.
Interesting side-note: I stopped following her when every other...

This morning, I finally got to attend a Social Media Breakfast Toledo (#SMBTOL). I got so see some familiar faces and finally had the opportunity to move beyond the Twitter avatars with others. This isn’t intended to be a comprehensive list of attendees. Rather, these are the TOLeeps that I’ve connected with on a personal level, all of whom share valuable content on Twitter.

Hola. Welcome to the new home for my personal blog posts. If you haven’t read my Why Another Blog? page, do so now. You haven’t read it. Why are you still here? Seriously. Go read it! Cool. That saves me from saying some of the same things twice. From this point forward, this blog will be all about my life outside of social media. If you arrived here via some form of trickery and could...

I’d like to thank Jolie O’Dell for capturing this moment. I almost forgot it happened. I don’t think I’d ever told that story before that night. It might not seem like much, but the story means a lot to me. By the way, that’s Josh Kulpa and Dingman who occasionally poke their heads into the video. Had a great time with those two that night. Jazz clubs that close by midnight,...

Yesterday was a day that I had been looking forward to for about a week. If you haven’t figured it out by reading posts to my other various social networking entities, Katy and I have been spending a lot of time together lately. There’s still a mess of epic proportions between us, but we’re taking one day at a time. Having a four-year-old child complicates the ability to spend any...

I don’t necessarily understand the term “broken record.” It seems like the cliche would be more accurate as a “scratched record.” Of course, the idea is that the same thing occurs over and over again. Perhaps “broken” is used to describe a situation that is too deeply scratched to ever work properly again. For a while, I thought my life and relationships fit...

I shit you not. My sinuses are the root of all evil. I woke up this morning feeling completely run down. For the first few hours of the day, I thought maybe it was just from a lack of sleep lately. But as early afternoon approached, the telltale sinus headache removed all doubt.
In December of 2007, I had sinus surgery to open six blocked sinus passages. That’s right. Essentially all of my sinuses...
